Best-known for their sun-soaked beaches and the buzzing nightlife of Ibiza, the Balearic Islands are also home to some spectacular scenery and historical architecture. Near Ibiza's old town is a Phoenician settlement site from the 7th century BC and a necropolis of around 3000 tombs. To the north of the island, you can leave the heat of summer on a tour around the C'an Marça caves, once used by smugglers. Any visit to Mallorca should include Palma de Mallorca's old town with labyrinthine streets, and the Palau de l'Almudaina, once a Moorish fortress, later converted into a royal palace for Catholic monarchs. For a more laid-back experience, visit Menorca or Formentera. Menorca's Monte Toro offers panoramic views and a 13th-century church. Formentera shares the Parque Natural de ses Salines with Ibiza and features secluded beaches and historical buildings. Younger visitors will enjoy splashing around at the many water parks in Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca.

Es Vedrà – A magical landmark off the Ibiza coast

The mystical Es Vedrà looms 400 metres out of the sea near Ibiza's southwest coast. Local legends suggest it was the home of Greek mythology's Sirens or the birthplace of Phoenician goddess Tanit, among other possibilities.Take a boat trip to get up close or travel to one of several recommended land-based viewing points, the best of which may be the Torre des Savinar tower located 200 metres above sea level on a promontory that juts out from the Ibiza coastline.Come at sunrise or sunset to see Es Vedrà gilded by sunlight or silhouetted dramatically against the horizon.
Dalt Vila – Ibiza's imposing fortified Old Town

Climb the slope towards the imposing walls of Ibiza's old town and you might feel some of the trepidation once experienced by besieging forces. Tall, plain and robust, these walls mean business. Walk Dalt Vila‘s winding cobbled streets to the top of the hill and you could say much the same about Ibiza's cathedral, overlooking the town and sea from its hilltop vantage. Sturdy buttresses are the defining exterior feature. Inside it's light and airy but elegant, not extravagant.Nearby is an archaeological museum. Elsewhere, the area's museums showcase local artists, the evolution and construction of fortifications and weaponry and striking contemporary art.
Catedral de Mallorca or “La Seu" – An immense gothic structure

Stand in awe at one of the world's tallest naves and walk among interlaced flying buttresses to see pinnacles soaring high above the town. This enormous cathedral took 370 years to build, and renovations in the 19th century introduced new features, including the buttresses and pinnacles.Narrow pillars supporting the vaulted ceiling make the huge nave even more spacious, while the 90 stained-glass windows fill the ‘Cathedral of Light' with colour. Check out the giant Rose Window on the western wall for a breathtaking example.Pay a little extra – and climb 280 steps – to visit the roof terraces and enjoy the wonderful views of the city and sea.
Enjoy the mountain air in the Serra de Tramuntana

This impressive Serra de Tramuntana mountain range runs 90 km along virtually the entire northwest coastline of Mallorca from Andratx in the west to Cap de Formentor in the north. This gorgeous Mediterranean landscape with dry stone walls and ancient olive trees provides a hiker's paradise.Walkers should check out the Dry Stone Route (GR-221), 170 km of signposted mountain pathways divided into 8 recommended stages of varying lengths and difficulty. Pick a stage that suits you and trek past mountain villages, olive groves and holm oak forests, all while enjoying fabulous views of the sea.
